Case Study

Sleep Hygiene Microlearning Solution

Project Data

Responsibilities: Needs Analysis, Design, and eLearning Development

Type: eLearning

Date: May 2021

Target Audience: U.S. Army Soldiers

Tools Used: Rise 360

Problem: Soldiers frequently have poor sleep hygiene and frequently forgot information they hear during medical visits.

Action: Designed and developed a microlearning solution to help improve sleep hygiene.

Targeted Results: Improved sleep hygiene and productivity.

Summary

I developed this project for a client who is a U.S. Army physician to provide follow-up information for his patients after medical visits. During visits, his patients were frequently distracted and lost the paper handouts he gave them. He knew if he could text them a quick note with a link for a microlearning solution, many would read the information and develop better habits that would improve their productivity and quality of life.

Challenge

Many soldiers struggle with poor sleep hygiene that negatively impacts their ability to do their jobs, increases avoidable accidents, and reduces their quality of life, as it interferes with their personal relationships. Most soldiers also dislike training due to poor quality and the frequent need to complete training on their personal time.

Action

To develop the solution, I utilized Cathy Moore's Action Mapping Model to identify the:

  • Goals

  • Necessary information

  • Practice options

  • Feedback options

I worked with Dr. Campos to analyze needs, identify the learning objective, and provide the most relevant information for patients. He provided me with content that I broke down into clear actionable steps that are simple to read on a mobile phone. After developing the storyboard, I incorporated Dr. Campos' feedback by adding a link to an insomnia severity index form that can help identify more severe behavioral health issues.

Since his learners have experienced difficult training conditions, I gave them the option to skip ahead easily and learn from a scenario featuring Sam, a likable soldier who makes poor choices but is open to exploring healthier habits. Sam sees the value of his good decisions and feels the brunt of the consequences of his poor decisions. The scenario flows without the ability to try again after each choice because life flows in a similar way. We learn from our mistakes and move forward.

To create the microlearning solution, I curated content, designed the storyboard, incorporated Dr. Campos' feedback, and reviewed the solution with a colleague for additional insight. A development challenge I encountered was developing the scenario while learning the program. I overcame the challenge by continually previewing and iterating the scenario until the story was realistic and engaging.

Results

Dr. Campos is excited about sharing the course with his patients to hear their reactions. I am guiding him to use Kirkpatrick's Model to evaluate the results of fewer repeated visits due to changes in behavior, or the quicker identification of more serious behavioral health issues.
