Tools Used: Trello, Vyond, Articulate Rise, iRubric, Canva, Google Docs, and Google Sheets

Challenge: Remind learners of the steps and guide the performance of baking a cake.

Action: Identified objectives, established project scope and timeline, designed and developed an eLearning solution that reminded learners of steps and guided performance of baking a cake.

Results: Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Summary

This concept learning solution is designed to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) needed as an instructional designer.

Challenge

To remind workforce learners of the steps of baking a cake and guide and assess their knowledge and skill performance.

Action

Project Steps

  1. Analysis

    1. Identified the problem, organizational needs, and learner needs and considered what practice opportunities learners need.

  2. Design

    1. Designed learning objectives for the knowledge gap and skill gap.

    2. Developed the scope, timeline, and budget for the project using Trello to detail each step.

    3. Designed a draft, storyboard, or script for each project component, including the rubric, video, and eLearning solution.

    4. Requested and incorporated feedback.

  3. Development

    1. Developed the rubric, video, and eLearning solution.

    2. Requested and incorporated feedback.

  4. Implementation

    1. Implemented the course by exporting it from Articulate Rise, posting it to the Google Cloud, and linking it to my portfolio.

  5. Evaluation

    1. Evaluated the results using Kirkpatrick’s Model.

Impetus Behind Its Creation

I selected the project to challenge myself to learn a new video software, Vyond, and embed it, along with a rubric, into Articulate Rise. I selected the topic of instructing how to bake a cake because it has a similar approach to other workforce knowledge and skill instruction but is not proprietary.

Intended Audience

The intended audience for this concept project is the workforce at a gourmet bakery.

Outcomes/Goals Anticipated

The anticipated goals are for learners to:

  1. Recall and list the steps of baking a cake in the correct order

  2. Perform each step, in order, to produce a delicious cake

Source of Pride

I am proud of the clean look, simple flow, and rapid build of the course. I also like how the video presents the content, engages, and guides learners to the next step within 3 minutes.

Concerns

I am concerned about the challenge of teaching a physical skill in an eLearning solution, as it will be difficult to provide quick, effective feedback and guidance beyond the rubric. I am also not fond of the Quiz Review section as it does not provide accurate feedback on learners' knowledge after completing the matching question.

Delivery Approach

Because the rubric feedback may lack clarity, I would feel more comfortable with a blended approach. I recommend learners complete the initial knowledge portion on their own, then bake and evaluate the cake in an instructor-led learning to provide opportunities for collaboration and immediate feedback.

Instructor-led Instruction Versus a Web-Based Training/Asynchronous Delivery

The knowledge portion approach is similar in instructor-led delivery as it would be in web-based delivery. Practicing the skills of each step would be much more effective in an instructor-led instruction with multiple learners in a lab or bakery who can collaborate, discuss obstacles and learn from each other. The opportunities for practice and immediate feedback, along with opportunities for remediation, are more effective in person as well. To meet the needs of the workforce learners, I recommend a blended approach, separating the knowledge and skill development portions.

Results

The project components demonstrate my knowledge, skills, and abilities needed as an instructional designer.

  • Project management with a Trello board that is easily shared with subject matter experts and stakeholders

  • Instructional design based on sound methodology

  • Performance evaluation with a rubric

  • Instruction with a Vyond video

  • Interactive practice and feedback with a rapid-development eLearning tool

  • Reflection and recommendations to improve the course
